HIRING A CONTRACTOR

What you should know before hiring a CSLB contractor.

PREPARATION

Following these instructions carefully will help you prepare for your new roof.

FAQ's
We answer some commonly asked questions regarding roofing .

Following these instructions carefully will help you prepare for your new roof.

  1. Engineering Report and Bracing: Approximately one to two weeks before the starting date of your roofing job, we will contact you in order to set up an appointment with our framing inspector who will need to inspect the framing of your house. To do this the inspector will need access to all attic spaces in order to carefully examine the existing framing. This information will be used by the engineers to insure the structural integrity of your home. We will contact you when we receive the official engineering report and tell you if there will be any additional costs for bracing. At that time we will finalize your exact starting date.

  2. Clearing of Vehicles: Please move all cars, boats, campers, trailers, etc. out from the garage and out of the driveway from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday until the roof is finished.

  3. Dust, Dirt and Debris: Please cover all valuables which are in your attic and garage. During the tear-off, these areas may be exposed to dust and falling shingles. If there are rooms in your home that have open beam "tongue & groove" cathedral ceilings with no drywall or acoustical ceilings, you will need to cover all furniture, carpets, and valuables in those rooms. Dust and dirt may find its way through the cracks of the "tongue & groove" boards. (Standard acoustical ceilings or plaster ceilings adequately protect the interior of your home and no additional protection is needed.)

  4. Vibrations: Please remove or secure any lose items which are hanging on walls or stored in cabinets. Such objects can be jarred or shaken loose by vibrations resulting from hammering, loading materials, etc.

  5. Access: Please leave the side door to the garage and the side gate to the backyard unlocked so we can clean up after the tear-off is finished. If you have pets in your backyard, please leave a note with any special instructions or precautions to be taken by our crews (especially in the case of dogs that may bite).

  6. Outdoor Power: If no outdoor power is available, please make arrangements with our crews to provide access to a power outlet.

We will make every effort to complete your job quickly and efficiently with as little inconvenience as possible. We are accessible 24 hours a day via pagers and radio dispatching. Feel free to call our office at any time to ask questions about the progress of our work or concerns about the job. We will be happy to answer your questions and to address your concerns.

Our goal is to make this a positive experience by providing a team of prompt, courteous, and professional people to serve your roofing needs.

We appreciate your cooperation. If you have any additional questions or concerns please call Joe Shulman at 877-828-ROOF (877-828-7663).

Frequently Asked Questions

1. If I have an existing termite problem, should I tent or treat locally, and when?

We recommend that you treat for termites locally after your old roof is removed. During the sheathing phase before the new tarpaper is installed there is a 1 day time lapse while we are waiting for structural and sheathing inspection from the city. At that time termite control work can be easily performed. We can recommend a licensed termite control operator or you can use your own.

2. Should I paint the outside of my house before or after I re-roof?

It depends on several factors. There are advantages to both.

A. Two-story and split level houses: It is always best to paint before you install your new roof. This will prevent over spray and excessive roof traffic, which may cause damage to your new tiles.

B. One-story homes: These can be painted before or after re-roofing. However, it is a good idea to have the trim painted first, if you are having a tile roof installed, because the tile rake caps cover 4-6 inches of the facia board that will not be exposed for painting later.

Special Tip: If you choose to paint first, ask your painter to include in his bid a follow-up visit to paint any newly installed facia or shiplap that may have been replaced during the roofing job due to dryrot or termite damage, and to touch up any scratches or scuffs that may have occurred during re-roofing.

3. May I remount my TV antenna on my new roof after I re-roof?

Most TV antennas are old and obsolete due to cable communications. We will dispose of your old antenna with the tear-off at your request. However, if you depend on your antenna and wish to have it reinstalled, you will need to have the antenna strapped to your chimney. Most antennas are clamped to pipes or mounted directly to the old wood shake shingles and supported by guide wires. This method will not work with tile roofs. Antennas may not be reinstalled this way. We will be happy to mount your antenna to your chimney, the charge for this $50.00.
